National Sleep Foundation volunteer Dr. Frankie Roman meets with Rep. Ralph Regula (R-Ohio) during National Sleep Awareness Week to discuss funding for sleep activities at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). During a hearing of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education, Regula asked CDC Director Dr. Julie Gerberding if there was currently a program within the CDC that focused on sleep surveillance. Dr. Gerberding said that although there is nothing that specifically works with sleep surveillance, she is looking into it and examining the potential of creating a specific program. She also mentioned that she is aware that Secretary of Health and Human Services Michael Leavitt is interested in pursuing the issue of sleep.
